Many travelers make an effort to try the local foods, or national/regional dishes of the area they visit. Exploring the local food, and drink establishments, is the best part of traveling and is a great way to learn more about the local people, and their customs, and a great way to meet the locals as well. I enjoy trying new and unusual food and drinks, and I would eat almost anything that was presumed safe, and legal. That would include sampling the photogenic, Atlantic Puffin when I go to Iceland. While there I will also try Minke Whale steak, and Fermented Shark, washed down with Brennivin, known locally as “Black Death”. And I look forward to having some of their excellent Icelandic lamb, fresh seafood, and skyr for desert.

The Atlantic Puffin is part of the national dish in Iceland, where the species does not have legal protection. Puffins are hunted by a technique called “sky fishing”, which involves using a big net to catch low-flying birds. Iceland is the home to about 10 million Atlantic Puffins. The largest single puffin colony in the world is in Westmann Isles, which belong to Iceland.

Steve, would you eat puffin?

What kind of question is that? What have you been puffin? I would definitely try it, if that’s what they were offering. I like duck, and it probably tastes like a cross between duck and seagull, not that I have ever tried seagull. It seems they usually serve it smoked or marinated, probably to tame the flavor. I wouldn’t mind having some Brennivin to drink with it, just in case. I look forward to tasting it whenever I go to Iceland. I just hope there isn’t a McDonald’s there selling Puffin McMuffin.
